Music is in Alex Ray’s blood. His dad was a DJ - still is. The tale of the Chubby - The Avenger’s Sound System is one too varied to go into here, except to say that he was fortunate to experience a wide range of music played at a disturbingly loud volume from a tender age!
Rock Steady, Blue Beat, Ska, Reggae all were pre-requisite for any Sound System but in addition to these sounds his father was a lover of old style Rhythm & Blues – not to be mixed up modern counterpart. In addition to those ancient 78 R&B tracks and various jazz greats, he was enveloped in the sounds of Stax, Atlanta, and of course, Motown.
It was perhaps inevitable that he would inherit a love of vinyl and Alex Ray’s musical taste is, in its own way, just as varied. At the tender age of 17 his first assignment was at a party that a friend, and fellow learner DJ, Richard had arranged for them to “entertain” at. Their music collection wasn’t the strongest nor were their technical skills. Nevertheless the party was a success. Over fifteen years later and the DJing skills are a lot better! During that period Alex Ray has played at many underground parties, bars and clubs in London and Brighton and abroad, Lebanon of all places.
